The Cost of Being Different

By Madeleine Welsh

Not all struggles are visible. Not all stories are heard.

Madeleine Welsh entered elementary school excited to learn, make friends, and chase her big ideas. Instead, she found herself navigating a world that often misunderstood her.

Diagnosed with autism, ADHD, dyslexia, dyscalculia, and anxiety, Madeleine faced challenges that went far beyond academics: bullying, exclusion, school avoidance, and a system that saw her struggles before it saw her strengths.

From being labeled and overlooked, to fighting for accommodations that didn't always help, to holding on to the one place where she finally felt like she belonged — soccer — this is the true story of a girl who was trying her hardest to survive.
